AHN Wexford Hospital, Pennsylvania: 2023 Design Showcase Honorable Mention

AHN Wexford Hospital

AHN Wexford Hospital is an addition to Allegheny Health Network’s existing campus in Wexford, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh. The provider sought to bring care closer to home for its patients, siting the 340,000-square-foot project adjacent to the Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion. The project creates a medical campus that expands the continuum of care with a full spectrum of services.

Submitted to the Design Showcase by HKS Inc. (Washington, D.C.), the project, completed in June 2021, also presented an opportunity to focus on patient experience and efficient operations. Design decisions are based on achieving results that reduce wait times, staff fatigue and turnover, medical errors, operating costs, and energy consumption.

The $191 million project (which includes a new central plant) also required the team to configure the building to establish a new main entry to the campus for enhanced visibility and branding. Tight setbacks as well as height restrictions for the site resulted in the design solution of a dramatic cantilevered overhang at the building entrance. The solution creates a distinctive arrival experience and an innovative structural solution.
