Delgado Community College – Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health, New Orleans

Delgado Community College’s (New Orleans) new Nursing and Allied Health building is a significant step forward in consolidating healthcare programs and reflecting the institution’s growth and excellence.

The project marks the first new campus classroom facility since 2015. Delgado Community College and Ochsner Health see end of paragraph have partnered to train the next generation of nurses and allied health professionals.

Planning a campus addition

The project brings together all nursing and allied health programs from three sites, including the Charity Campus, City Park Campus, and Jefferson Campus, into one location. The building houses 22 allied health programs, two nursing programs, a virtual hospital, college administration and staff offices, and shared classrooms and testing labs.

Situated prominently at the front of the campus, adjacent to the historic Isaac Delgado Hall, the new building ties traditional campus elements with modern architecture. For example, campus-facing elevations feature a blend of brick and stone, echoing the intricate details and character of existing buildings.

The design, delivered through a joint venture between Manning Architects (New Orleans) and Mackey Mitchell Architects (St. Louis, Mo.), is rooted in fostering integrated healthcare programs, immersive simulation learning, and future growth. Collocating programs that carefully considered which segments of students would benefit most from shared connections and interdisciplinary collaboration was a top priority when programming this facility.  This convergence of education is intended to simulate collaborative patient care, a factor that will be essential to the students’ success in real-world practice.

The use of extensive exterior glazing fosters transparency, allowing passersby to engage visually with their advanced learning spaces. Inside, a range of teaching environments, from traditional lecture rooms to state-of-the-art simulation labs, enriches the educational experience. The Virtual Hospital spaces provide realistic simulation learning, allowing students to train and observe.

Biophilic design principles

Great care was taken to not only comply with city landscape and tree regulations intended to maintain the tree canopy, but also in the spirit of preservation. Mature live oak trees that line the arcade at the east edge of campus that faces historic City Park, are a signature feature of the local vernacular and preserving them became paramount to the success of the project.   An arborist was engaged early and throughout construction to identify safe trimming and care practices.

Native plantings ensure a lush and colorful surrounding that complements the biophilic design language employed on the interior of the project. The building offers views of the tree canopy, providing occupants with moments of serenity and calmness. Lounge spaces within the canopy offer respite from the simulated and often intense settings that are inherent of in-patient care. These multiple points of exposure to the outdoors throughout the building aim to collectively create a deeper connection between the students and nature throughout the span of their academic journey.
