For the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, she led a comprehensive master planning effort to examine the best use of the hospital’s 1960s-era legacy facilities. She developed a 30-year roadmap with phased short-and long-term initiatives for strategic expansion, potential green-field development, and off-site ambulatory facilities and wellness programs to better serve the community.  She also played a key role in planning and design of the 320,000-square-foot campus transformation at Johns Hopkins S

Making The Connection At Seattle Children’s Hospital

Image
For nearly a decade, Seattle Children’s Hospital has been transforming its campus as part of a 15-year master plan, which was approved in 2010. The multiphase, 1 million-square-foot campus expansion kicked off with the opening of a 330,000-square-foot cancer, critical, and emergency care expansion in 2013. That project added new inpatient beds and an emergency department. “[These were] the highest priority on campus,” says Kari Thorsen, principal interior designer for the project, at ZGF Architects (Seattle), which handled the master planning, architecture, and interior design for the entire campus expansion project. The latest addition is a new 485,500-square-foot diagnostic and treatment facility, opened in June. The project is a response to the hospital’s need to increase clinical capacity and replace some of its aging buildings. Additionally, through this newest building, the design team sought to create a sense of cohesion across campus by building upon a wayfinding program in

Spreading The News On Behavioral Health Crisis Units

Image

Between 2007 and 2016, emergency department (ED) visits for behavioral health services in the U.S. increased from 6.6 percent to 10.9 percent, according to the article “Increasing Emergency Department Visits for Mental Health Conditions in the United States,” published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry . Face Time: Julia Jude At Cannon Design

Image
The vice president at Cannon Design in Dallas shares what drew her to a career in pediatric design, the need for m] ore inclusive design for all, and her purrfect way to kick off the day. What drew you to a career in healthcare design? Aspiration to help others and create a brighter world. Before joining FKP (prior to its merger with CannonDesign), I worked on numerous other building typologies, and while the projects themselves were challenging and interesting, I was missing something. We all want to feel like we are contributing to the greater good, and healthcare design—especially for pediatrics—serves a greater purpose in the creation of meaningful, beautiful places of healing. What was your first healthcare design project? Dayton Children’s Hospital inpatient tower. What lesson from that project do you still carry with you today?   Creating spaces that elicit wonder and joy through scale, color, and unexpected details makes a difference. Every time I visit Dayton Children’
