KVC Health Systems (Olathe, Kan.) and Children’s Mercy Hospital (Overland Park, Kan.) broke ground on a new 72-bed mental health inpatient hospital in Olathe, Kan. The hospital will serve both children and adults, according to the website governor.kansas.gov . The project will include 48 pediatric beds and 24 adult beds, six private courtyards, walking paths, and dining and activity spaces. The $53 million project is supported by a grant from the State of Kansas Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK; Topeka, Kan.). Federal American Rescue Plan Act Funding was distributed for the project. Valley Health System (Ridgewood, N.J.) is planning to open Valley Hospital in Paramus, N.J., in April 2024, according to the website rj-nj.com . The new acute care hospital will house 370 private patient rooms and an expanded emergency department. The project will incorporate sustainable design and smart hospital features, including artificial intelligence, smart beds, and real-time location systems. Valley Hospital will be part of a comprehensive 40-acre campus that also includes a medical office building, Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care (located inside the Robert & Audrey Luckow Pavilion), the George R. Jaqua Same Day Services Center, and a full-service retail pharmacy. Acadia Healthcare (Franklin, Tenn.), a nationwide provider of behavioral health care, and SolutionHealth (Bedford, N.H.), the parent organization of the Elliot Health (Manchester, N.H.) and Southern New Hampshire Health (Nashua, N.H.), are planning a new behavioral health hospital in south central New Hampshire, according to the website unionleader.com . The 144-bed hospital will comprise four adult psychiatric care units, each with 24 beds; a 24-bed child and adolescent care unit; geriatric behavioral health unit; as well as a courtyard and therapeutic outdoor space. Services will include mood disorders, trauma, thought disorders, and dual diagnoses that include substance misuse. Partial hospital programs and intensive outpatient services will be offered onsite. The $60 million project is slated to open in 2025. Integrated architecture, interior design, and planning firm Hord Coplan Macht (Baltimore) has added Jean Lee Pirkey as associate principal to its Charlotte, N.C., office. University of Michigan Health  (U-M Health; Ann Arbor, Mich.) celebrated the topping out of the $920 million D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion. (For more on the Pavilion, go here .) The 12-story, 264-bed facility will include a neurosciences center, cardiovascular and thoracic care services, 20 surgical suites, and three interventional radiology suites. The care pavilion is adjacent to the U-M Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center. Future bridge and tunnel connections are planned to link the two facilities. Designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the pavilion is expected to exceed current energy efficiency standards by 20 percent compared to the State of Michigan’s building code for energy performance. Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., recently completed a modernized arrival space and lobby. The project includes improved vehicular traffic functions, including drop-off and pick-up areas, expanded Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-accessible parking areas, and pedestrian circulation routes and entries that are separated from staff shuttles for safety and efficiency. Prior to project’s completion, the 323-bed facility was accessed from a sub-level garage. Improvements to the lobby include a three-bank elevator system for visitors, new signage, and color-coded floor assignments coordinated with the hospital’s wayfinding improvement project. A grand stairway was added to connect visitors to the main atrium and visitor check-in area. The project team includes design firm  HGA  (Washington, D.C.).
