Mass General Brigham Adopts Templated Clinic Design

Image
Over the last 30 years since Mass General Brigham (MGB) was established, many of the health system’s ambulatory facilities have been operated as outpatient departments of academic medical centers. Over time, however, surveys revealed that patients were looking for more convenient, comprehensive, community-based healthcare options beyond the hospital setting. “To deliver on the promise of lower cost care closer to home for our patients, we decided to launch a new entity to operate freestanding clinics and ambulatory surgery centers throughout the community,” says Lindsay Gainer, enterprise vice president of community operations at MGB (Boston). This new concept, called Integrated Care (iCare), reimagines the patient and provider experience by creating a more streamlined model of relationship-based care than the standard hospital model. A traditional clinic design separates medical services into distinct departments and reserves exam rooms for certain specialties; the iCare model hol

What Is A Rural Emergency Hospital?

Image
Since 2010, America’s rural communities have been facing a rapidly growing crisis of disparity in access to healthcare. Rural hospitals across the nation are closing their doors at a faster rate than ever seen before. This is creating ripple effects throughout the communities they once served and crippling access to emergency care, negatively impacting prospective economic development, and leaving a dwindling population in its wake. According to the National Rural Health Association ’s July 2023 article, “Rural Emergency Hospital Model Summary,” more than 135 rural hospitals have closed since 2010 and more than 450 are identified as vulnerable to closure. The American Hospital Association ’s 2022 report Rural Hospital Closures Threaten Access outlines the issues contributing to closure including low reimbursement, staffing shortages, low patient volume, and regulatory barriers. To amplify these issues further, in 2016, Medicare underpayments increased beyond 40 percent, resulting

Keeping Pace With Technology In Healthcare Design

Image
On the recommendation of a board member, I recently read “Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow .” Written by Yuval Noah Harari, it explores the future of humankind and the possible trajectories of human evolution in the 21st century. It’s a fascinating read, filled with predictions that will stimulate your own thoughts about their impact on our healthcare system and, in turn, on our industry. Published in 2015, it’s especially interesting to read it through our 2023 lens, as we are already seeing glimmers of some of the advances the author foresees. The premise of “Homo Deus” is that with the advancements in science, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI), humans will gain increasing control over their biological and cognitive processes. As such, we’ll strive to overcome the limitations of mortality, suffering, and ignorance. We will transition, Harari argues, from being Homo sapiens (“wise humans”) to a new species called Homo Deus (“god-like humans”). Though the concept o

The MetroHealth Glick Center, Cleveland: 2023 Design Showcase Honorable Mention

Image
Central to a master plan to transform The MetroHealth System ’s main campus in Cleveland, the 800,000-square-foot Glick Center opened in November 2022 as a catalyst to bring hope and healing to the city’s diverse and economically challenged West Side. (For more on the project, read this HCD magazine feature .) The project was submitted to the Design Showcase by HGA (Milwaukee). And while it’s primed to deliver care efficiently today, it’s ready for the future thanks to a “process-neutral” platform that answers a call to achieve limitless flexibility to adapt to change in both technology and care delivery. To that end, the building design leverages modular and open floor plans, movable walls, prefabricated components, and demountable systems that allow rooms and spaces to be quickly reconfigured. Service platforms are universal to permit easy flexing between service lines, as needed. Meanwhile, the master plan further establishes the $608 million project as a “hospital in a park

Technology Installation Provides Positive Distraction in Children’s Mercy Burn Clinic

A severe burn injury is traumatic for anyone. But for a 4-year-old having to submit to weekly hospital visits for hands-on treatment of that burn, the aftermath can be particularly stressful. When Children’s Mercy Kansas City in Kansas City, Mo., decided to relocate its burn clinic to accommodate a pediatric intensive care unit expansion at the hospital a couple of years ago, the clinic staff saw an opportunity to do something special to address this difficult reality. Celebrate The 2023 Healthcare Design Showcase

Successful healthcare design projects deliver spaces that do some serious heavy lifting, from supporting efficient and effective care delivery to engaging patients and providing a positive experience to uplifting both the organization and the community it serves. Yet, despite the tall order, each year we see submissions to the Healthcare Design Showcase manage to do just that, and much more. We’re excited to share this, our 23rd year of the program that celebrates excellence in healthcare design. All submissions to the Design Showcase were reviewed by our jury of industry professionals including architects, interior designers, owners, and consultants. The submissions were judged based on achievements in the categories of Innovation, Aesthetics, Experience, and Operational Performance. The projects that received the highest scores in the first round of virtual jury review then advanced to the second round, a live, in-person judging event held in Omaha, Neb., this past spring. There,
