Next-Gen Master Planning For Healthcare

The past few years have brought profound, ongoing change to our nation’s hospitals. The COVID-19 pandemic upended the way care is delivered, introducing new design strategies and regulatory codes, while other code changes, such as seismic regulations, have disqualified existing spaces for certain uses. Organizations are also navigating cash flow challenges, while responding to rising demand—outpatient and inpatient volumes are expected to increase by 16 percent and 2 percent respectively over the next decade, according to a report by SG2 , a healthcare consultancy firm. This rapidly changing market is a challenging context for master planning, which requires organizations to project their anticipated capital needs over a multiyear timeline. The result is a conundrum: American healthcare systems continue to create long-term master plans, but they frequently discard them after a few years as changing market conditions render them obsolete. Fortunately, there are more adaptable approa

Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown Embraces New Model For Care

Image
Leaders at Emory Healthcare and Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University (Atlanta) made it clear from the beginning that they had big ambitions for their new building. They told the design team: Give us something “never before seen or imagined.” The new facility, occupying 450,000 square feet in Atlanta’s Midtown neighborhood, was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM; New York) in collaboration with May Architecture (Atlanta)—with input from 200-plus physicians, nurses, janitors, patient family advisers, and more, says SOM Principal Anthony Treu. “Anybody who could possibly be involved with this project was asked to come and share, ‘How do you do things now? And how do you want to do things differently?’” he says. Then they dug in deep. “Clinical teams are so adept at working around obstacles on a daily basis that when faced with the chance to create an ideal solution, there’s a natural tendency to default to what’s been working for them,” says Gil May, principal

Community Health Centers Play Important Role In Expanding Care Access

When Americans experience a disparity in their access to healthcare, many utilize the support of community health centers. These nonprofit organizations offer high-quality medical care to patients who may not otherwise be able to afford or access care, such as primary medical care, pharmacies, dental and mental health services, and specialty clinics. According to the National Association of Community Health Centers (Bethesda, Md.), one in 11 Americans is a health center patient. Of those patients, 59 percent are publicly insured, 90 percent are low income, 65 percent are members of racial/ethnic minority groups, and 42 percent live in rural communities. The same study showed that health centers provide care for 1.3 million unhoused people, 8.6 million children, 400,000 veterans, and 3.3 million elderly patients. Even with this breadth of services and patient populations, the extent to which a community utilizes a community health center and its services is dependent upon how visibl

A Tailored Approach To Cancer Center Design

Image
Cancer patients often struggle with their cancer diagnosis, eventual health constraints, and the emotional and physical roller-coaster journey required to negotiate and receive timely care successfully. An empathetic understanding of cancer patients’ journey and specific needs is critical to successful planning and design of cancer care facilities. This includes lobbies, waiting rooms, patient rooms, nurses’ stations, and exams rooms, with spaces designed to support healing, comfort, and emotional well-being. Additionally, conveniently located resources such as nutritional, financial, behavioral health, genetic, and other consultation services should be available and easy to access to further help patients through their cancer journey. Outlining the patient journey Tapping into stories from cancer patient and family advisory groups is the first step in seeing things through their eyes. Patients and families can be excellent resources for input on appropriate design responses. Develo

How Do We Push For Innovation In Healthcare Design?

Image
Photo credit: The Center for Health Design The Center for Health Design has been deep in strategic planning for the past nine months. Because of that, we’ve spent a great deal of time exploring the current state of the healthcare design industry to better understand the role we can play over the next decade in continuing to push for innovation. Innovation is one of those words that gets thrown around easily. Everyone wants to be innovative and knows when they see innovation, but getting there is far more complex. It requires not only seeing an area where change needs to happen but also challenging existing belief systems, standards, and solutions. That takes work. Advances in healthcare design Looking back, the industry can be proud of the advances in healthcare design that we’ve envisioned, cultivated, and launched into new baseline expectations. When I started in this industry 34 years ago, it wasn’t uncommon to see two to four patients in a room. Today, you’d be hard-pressed

Take 5 With Project Management Advisors’ Doug King

In this series, Healthcare Design asks leading healthcare design professionals, firms, and owners to tell us what has their attention and share their ideas on the subject. Doug King is vice president and national healthcare sector lead at Project Management Advisors Inc ., a program management/owner representative firm in Chicago. Here he shares his thoughts on why hospitals are adding more retail space, the role of FQHCs in providing health equity, and the use of AI and robotics for materials handling. Goodbye hospital cafeterias, hello stores and eateries   Taking a cue from vibrant coffee shops and revamped airport terminals, healthcare operators are developing mixed-use spaces that cater to contemporary tastes and needs. Hospitals are increasingly eliminating the traditional cafeteria and opting for retail, food, and shopping experiences that appeal to visitors, staff, and patients. For example, Northwestern Medicine in Chic
