Take 5 With Taylor Design’s Kevin Hinrichs

Image
In this series,  Healthcare Design  asks leading healthcare design professionals, firms, and owners to tell us what has their attention and share ideas on the subject. Kevin Hinrichs is the president of Taylor Design , an architecture, planning, interior design, and design strategy firm with five California offices. Here, he shares his thoughts on caring for healthcare workers, supply chain disruptions, and designing for disaster.   Caring for healthcare staff Even before COVID, prioritizing space for healthcare staff was a battleground for negotiation. Caregivers never ask for special treatment because that’s just who they are. As a result, healthcare staff historically have received leftover space, such as windowless breakrooms in the pits of the facility. But the constant and intense pressure that caregivers face requires a place of respite. This grew more obvious during COVID, not only because there were so many sick and dying patients, but because family and friends couldn

Are Patient Rooms Sinks Necessary?

Image
Recently, I spent 14 full days with a family member on critical care, stepdown, and acute care surgical units. During that time, not once did I see a clinician or any other hospital staff use the handwashing sink in the patient room. Instead, each person either used alcohol-based sanitizer (ABHS) and/or  donned disposable gloves. In the critical care and stepdown rooms, the sink was located right inside the door; on the older surgical unit, it was across from the foot of the bed—both locations visible and accessible. This got me thinking—have protocols changed, especially since COVID ?  Should healthcare designers rethink the need for, or location of, a patient room handwashing sink? History of handwashing stations The 2001 edition of the FGI Healthcare Facility Guidelines was the first time the Facility Guidelines Institute included the requirement in new construction that a handwashing station be provided in the patient room in addition to a sink in the toilet room. The intenti

5 Reasons For Designers To Specialize In Healthcare Interior Design

Image
Monica Margolles-Flores (MPS-H), Hospital Design Capstone project, hallway from main lobby to elevators Between the soaring popularity of HGTV shows and meaningful new studies on the impact interior design can have on healing and happiness, it’s not surprising that designers (and even non-designers; more on that later) are finding interior design opportunities in healthcare and wellness-related projects. But for a specialty to truly influence a designer’s career, pursuing a deep dive—through a master’s degree program for example—is an undeniably smart decision. And when it comes to healthcare interior design in particular, it can be life-changing too. Here’s why designers should consider specializing in healthcare interior design, with insights from New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) faculty and graduates of its MPS in Design of Healthcare Environments (MPS-H) program, which is offered both online and in-person. 1. City of Hope Converts Office Building To Cancer Clinic

Image
City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center City of Hope’s main campus in Duarte, Calif., near Los Angeles, has expanded significantly since it opened there in 1913, growing into one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S. But patients in Orange County, Calif., about 50 miles south of the flagship treatment center, were commuting at least an hour each way (sometimes two, depending on traffic). To address this, the organization wanted to bring cancer care closer to Orange County’s 3.2 million residents and better serve that growing segment of its patient population. So it set out to build a new centrally located outpatient cancer center in Irvine, Calif., one of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the county. City of Hope identified an existing four-story commercial office building as the ideal site for the project. Then it hired architecture firm ZGF (Los Angeles) for master planning and design. “Converting an office building

How Healthcare Facility Design Can Improve Nurse Productivity

Among all the stakeholders who stand to benefit the most from thoughtful design of healthcare spaces, nurses are right near the top, arguably only behind patients. And with nurse turnover at an alarmingly high rate— Healthcare Finance News reported the number at 27.1% in January —the healthcare industry is paying close attention to ways to stem that tide. For National Nurses Week (May 6-12), Healthcare Design reached out to the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD) to discuss some of the pain points affecting nurse efficiency, comfort, and satisfaction in the workplace. Here, NIHD member Sara Francis, a registered nurse and director of planning, design, and construction for Atrium Health in Charlotte, N.C., identifies three such issues and how good facility design can improve nurse productivity. Nursing pain point #1: Workflow inefficiency Nurses do a lot of walking, and facility design plays a big role in just how much. One way healthcare designers can reduce travel

How Research Can Inform Healthcare Real Estate Development

Historically, the development of healthcare real estate has been a bifurcated process by which real estate developers buy either land to build new facilities or buildings to redevelop. Then the end-user, whether a medical practice, ambulatory surgical center operator, or healthcare system, purchases or leases the facility. Usually there is limited, if any, collaboration between the developer and the end user on the design of the facility. However, the successful bonding of real estate development and medical facility design requires a comprehensive focus on the strategic priorities and needs of physicians, providers, healthcare systems, and the patients and families they serve. Aspect Health Inc. , a Connecticut based real estate owner/developer/operator with an extensive background in hotels, multitenant office buildings, and medical office buildings, is working to address this disconnect. Its goal: to deliver advanced healthcare facilities using the latest research and technologies
