Take 5 With RMF Engineerings Jacek Grabowski

Image
In this series, Healthcare Design  asks leading healthcare design professionals, firms, and owners to tell us what has their attention and share ideas on the subject. Jacek Grabowski is a project manager at RMF Engineering (Baltimore). Here, he shares his thoughts on the increasing popularity of microgrids and engineering’s role in telemedicine. Balancing MEP training with new equipment The reliability of an MEP system is often measured by how much maintenance is required for the system to function. The most reliable systems are the ones that facility staff know, understand, and can perform repairs on, including equipment such as generators and switchgears. As new technologies such as lighting controls and geothermal systems are introduced to support healthcare facilities’ sustainability goals, the necessary training must also follow. Without proper education, system operators are more likely to force MEP equipment—specifically air handling units—to operate outside of the norma

Valley Childrens Healthcare To Install Microgrid On California Hospital Campus

Located in a rural part of Central California, Valley Children’s Healthcare, which delivers care to more than 1.3 million children, regularly faces the threat of rolling blackouts, unsteady water supplies, and wildfires. This volatility impacts the organization’s ability to deliver services at its 358-bed standalone Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, Calif., as well as its specialty and primary care practices. “Our doors need to stay open because these kids don’t have anywhere else to go,” says Danielle Barry, chief operating officer at Valley Children’s, adding that the hospital has a 45,000-mile catchment area. Healthcare Takes Aim At Decarbonization

Image
When the healthcare industry first started discussing climate change nearly two decades ago, conversations focused on addressing how much energy the sector—including hospitals, doctor’s offices, and clinics—uses. “We always felt like there was a big opportunity for healthcare organizations to reduce not only the environmental impacts of that energy use, but also the operating cost associated with it,” says Kim Shinn, principal and sustainability wizard at TLC Engineering Solutions (Brentwood, Tenn.). Climate change, which refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, can be caused by natural factors, such as fluctuations to the sun’s activity or volcanic eruptions, as well as human activities, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. These emissions, particularly carbon dioxide and methane, trap the sun’s heat, raising temperatures. As understanding about climate change and the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on people and the p

Can Healthcare Design Away Loneliness?

Image
It’s sobering to learn that in three separate studies, researchers found that one-half of American adults reported experiencing loneliness. And these studies were all conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis continues to escalate. In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General recently released the 82-page paper “ Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation .” The report equates the negative health impact of loneliness to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It’s even more damaging than inactivity or obesity, as cited in the American Psychology Journal study “Advancing Social Connection as a Public Health Priority.” Plus, loneliness has been found to increase the risk of dementia, stroke, heart disease, and premature death, which now makes it a social determinant of health . In our aging society, where loneliness rates among older adults exceed those of other populations, finding solutions will become even more important and impactful. According to a study by Maike Luhmann and Louise Hawkley,

Cancer Center Finds New Home In Nashville MOB

Image
Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI), one of the world’s leading oncology research organizations, was outgrowing the medical office building (MOB) that served as its headquarters since 1997. The old building, located across the street from TriStar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, was too small to comfortably accommodate the growing volume of patients participating in SCRI’s community-based clinical trials—let alone the staff and equipment required to develop and deliver cancer treatments. City View Medical Plaza, a newly constructed six-floor multitenant MOB on the campus of TriStar Centennial with enclosed connections to the hospital, provided a convenient solution. Specifically, it gave SCRI the additional space it needed in immediate proximity to a full-service medical facility. “This is not only very important for patients, should there be any adverse reactions, but also for our physicians and technicians, as they regularly go back and forth between the hospital,” say

Designing For Pediatric Patients With Complex Conditions

Dell Children’s Comprehensive Care Clinic, Texas Dell Children’s Comprehensive Care Clinic in Austin, Texas, serves a unique population of children with chronic medical conditions, severe disabilities, and special needs. These young patients require frequent and extensive care for complex conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, and physical disabilities; many also rely on assistive medical devices such as wheelchairs, wheelchair strollers, feeding tubes, and ventilators. Parents, caregivers, family members, and private duty nurses often accompany these children to clinic appointments. These visits typically last several hours as families meet with multidisciplinary teams consisting of primary care providers, dieticians, social workers, and nurse navigators who help coordinate care. For five years, the clinic operated in a leased storefront in Austin. How To Overcome Scheduling, Material Procurement Challenges In Healthcare Construction

Image
Across many U.S. regions, the demand for space in mental health treatment facilities far outpaces availability. In fact, in Massachusetts, according to a February 2022 report titled “Estimating Psychiatric Bed Shortages in the U.S.” in JAMA Psychiatry , “hundreds of patients have been wait-listed for acute inpatient psychiatric beds.” Former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker put out an urgent call for more inpatient mental health treatment for all ages in 2022. In response, Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) embarked on an ambitious plan for a series of renovations. The plan started with consolidating and expanding its children and adolescent programs as well as adding much needed adult beds at its Somerville, Mass., campus. The effort included relocating one of its children’s programs from a floor of its Cambridge campus, opening up opportunities for a new 7,800-square-foot adult inpatient mental health program.
