Momentous Sports Medicine, Washington, D.C. Momentous Sports Medicine is a physical therapy and sports performance practice in Washington, D.C., that blends elements of a medical office, gym, and spa. Owner Dr. Tim Vadale, a local physical therapist, tapped EL Studio (Washington, D.C.) with the task of creating a fully equipped, dynamic space to treat his patients. As a former athlete, Dr. Vadale requested a contemporary space reflecting both a medical facility and wellness spa that would optimize the physical assessment and treatment of his patients. Medical office renovation The project opened in October 2022 in Blagden Alley, a historic alleyway in northwest Washington and D.C.’s thriving Shaw neighborhood that includes bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. The 1,355-square-foot facility is housed in a former carriage house in the alley. Upon entry, patients are greeted by reception. Main Line Health Broomall

Image
With a goal to transform a series of separate collocated practices into a unified model that embodies the Main Line Health brand, Stantec worked collaboratively to carve out a two-story lobby flanked by multi-specialty practice space with a flexible exam module.  The resulting design concept established the light-filled lobby as the first point of arrival that supports quality patient care and an improved patient experience. Nature provides inspiration for a layered design, guiding the vision of “Designing a pathway to wellness.” The revitalized space features a dynamic lobby reinforcing Main Line Health’s long presence in the community. Connecting the two levels is a new skylight with a monumental stair and an adjacent feature wall. We drew inspiration from strong, bright beams of light penetrating a canopy of trees, as well as warm light cascading through the undulating surfaces of a canyon. The light-filled concourse adopts a hospitality feel to create a welcoming first stop for

Building Resiliency At Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital In Brooklyn

More than 100 years after Coney Island Hospital opened in Brooklyn, N.Y., the safety-net facility had to evacuate 272 patients in eight hours as Hurricane Irene made landfall in August 2011. A little more than a year later, the hospital was significantly affected when Superstorm Sandy hit the region, flooding the emergency room, damaging critical technology and infrastructure, and forcing a complete evacuation. “We’re about three-quarters of a mile away from the beachfront,” says Svetlana Lipyanskaya, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health . “When Sandy hit, the main street in front of us became a river … there were fish in our emergency department.” The Coney Island Hospital campus, part of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health system, houses the closest hospital to 875,000 residents in the southern part of Brooklyn, making it an important asset to the community. When it took several months to fully reopen following the damage from Sandy, Lipyanskaya says the

Supporting The Connection Between Facility Design And Outcomes

Image
“This is an exciting time for our industry. We might be facing some of our most demanding challenges, but we are also in a time of unprecedented growth in the construction of new building projects and of building renovations and remodels.” These were the opening words when I penned my first column 22 years ago for the newly launched Healthcare Design magazine. They are as relevant today as they were more than two decades ago. At that time, current spending on healthcare construction was $17 billion a year and was expected to increase to $27 billion annually in the next decade. This year, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, healthcare construction spending is estimated to reach more than $62 billion and continue to increase over the next five years. Increasing demand for healthcare services and an aging population will continue to drive new construction for the foreseeable future, especially for new outpatient clinics. At the same time, the added financ

Exciting Transitions In The Works At Healthcare Design

Image
It’s been 13 years since I joined the Healthcare Design team in September 2010. That timing worked out just right that a handful of weeks later, I was heading to Las Vegas for my first Healthcare Design Conference + Expo . One of my on-site assignments was to help with the stage presentation of our annual magazine awards ceremony. As I listened to the words being shared about the projects we were celebrating, the important work of this industry, and the results being achieved, I couldn’t help but be drawn in. In that moment, I realized how lucky I was to be there, to be part of this industry. I realized the difference good design can make; how the built environment shapes the experiences of patients, family, and staff members; how there are people in this world driven by the mission to make healthcare spaces better. And I gotta say, I was hooked—and I have been ever since. Over these years, I’ve had the immense honor of supporting this industry in our own brand mission to provide t

Expanded UH Ahuja Medical Center Includes Sports Medicine, Women’s Health Services In Beachwood, Ohio

Image
When University Hospitals (UH) Ahuja Medical Center opened in 2011 in Beachwood, Ohio, with a seven-story inpatient bed tower, the facility master plan still had two phases left to complete—including another tower that would increase the inpatient bed count from 144 up to 600. But when the Phase 2 expansion kicked off in June 2016, the project team soon realized the details of the project had to shift. Specifically, since Ahuja first opened, the hospital’s emergency department outgrew its space as several other nearby hospitals stopped offering emergency services. Meanwhile, other new practice areas, like UH’s sports medicine program, sprang from emerging needs in the community. So instead of expanding the inpatient bed capacity with a second tower on the community hospital’s campus, the designers had to pivot to a more ambulatory focus. Completed in late June, the $236 million project added two new buildings on the existing Ahuja campus: the new Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institut

HCD Conference 2023: Harnessing AI’s Potential In Healthcare

“Artificial intelligence [AI] is posed to change the field of healthcare by hundreds of billions of dollars.” This was the message from Radhika Dirks, CEO and co-founder of XLabs , which focuses on building moonshot companies for the future of artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and neurotech, as she kicked off the 2023 Healthcare Design Conference + Expo in New Orleans in early November. Named a “Forbes Women in AI,” Dirks brought her expertise to the HCD Conference stage to help attendees explore the technology’s role and potential in the industry. Setting the stage for the discussion, Dirks noted that it takes approximately $1 billion and nine years to bring a drug to market. Furthermore, 250,000 deaths in the U.S. every year can be attributable to medical errors—a statistic, that, if it was a disease, would be the third largest leading cause of death. “This number is predictably avoidable and fixable,” and one of the top use cases for AI, she said, noting that statisti

HCD Expo 2023: Don’t Neglect Support Spaces In Hospital Design

Revenue-generating spaces within healthcare facilities, such as patient, operating, and imaging rooms, get a lot of attention on projects. But back-of-house rooms are just as critical, said speakers at the 2023 Healthcare Design Conference + Expo Expo , Nov. 4-7 in New Orleans, during the session “Small But Mighty – Neglected Rooms That Will Make or Break Your Hospital Design.” The session was presented by Randy Geise, senior healthcare facility planner at Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland), Jennifer Storey, senior principal at Stantec Architecture (Cleveland), and Michael Zambo, principal at Bostwick Design Partnership (Cleveland). “When the business plan for a project is created, it’s based on the number of patient rooms, operating rooms, and imaging rooms, for example, because these spaces can only be utilized by one patient at a time, so it can be charged directly to the patient, their insurance, or Medicare for reimbursement,” Geise said. “The use of the spaces that support these r
